‘Atavist’ Earns 2 Nominations for the 2022 National Magazine Awards

The Atavist Magazine is thrilled to be a double nominee for the 2022 National Magazine Awards, administered by the American Society of Magazine Editors. The Atavist previously won the Feature Writing category in 2015, and it has earned eight other nominations over the last decade. (Read more about The Atavist’s many accolades here.)

This year, Maddy Crowell’s “Invisible Kid” is a finalist for Profile Writing. Crowell’s gripping, poignant feature is about Adolfo Davis, a Chicago native sentenced to life in prison without parole at age 16. Davis hoped a U.S. Supreme Court ruling would give him a chance at a new beginning, but nothing about freedom turned out as he expected. Crowell’s fellow nominees in Profile Writing include authors for Bicycling, ESPN.com, New York, The New Yorker, Pipe Wrench, and ProPublica.

A Feast for Lost Souls” is a finalist in the Video category, for a trio of short documentaries directed by Zahara Gómez Lucini. Created in collaboration with author Annelise Jolley, “A Feast for Lost Souls” is about a group of women in Sinaloa, Mexico, who recover the bodies of “disappeared” loved ones, and who also prepare meals for the missing and the dead. Other nominees in the Video category include Epicurious; The New Yorker; ProPublica with Time, Truly CA, and Univision Noticias; and TIME.

Established in 1966, the National Magazine Awards are sponsored by ASME in association with the Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism. Originally limited to print magazines, the awards now recognize magazine-quality journalism published in any medium. Two hundred and twenty-four national and regional media organizations submitted entries this year, including 486 in print, 484 in digital, and 104 in multiplatform. A full list of finalists is available on the ASME website. Winners will be announced at a ceremony on April 5.

Thanks to the ASME judges for this honor, and congratulations to all the nominees!
