Atavist wins 2022 Overseas Press Club prize

The Atavist Magazine has won its first-ever prize from the Overseas Press Club of America. “A Feast for Lost Souls” is the 2022 recipient of the Madeline Dane Ross Award, which honors the best international reporting that shows a concern for the human condition.

A multimedia collaboration between photographer and filmmaker Zahara Gómez Lucini and author Annelise Jolley, “A Feast for Lost Souls” documents the experiences of women in Sinaloa, Mexico, who recover the bodies of “disappeared” loved ones, and who honor the dead and missing through food. In naming it the winner of the Madeline Dane Ross Award, the judges described the project as “a visceral journey through the interminable sorrow and astonishing resilience of Mexican women who dig for their missing relatives and confront loss through lovingly prepared meals.” Drew Hinshaw, Joe Parkinson, and Vipal Monga of the Wall Street Journal received a citation for the Ross Award, for their project “Abandoned at Sea.”

The Overseas Press Club of America was founded in 1939 in New York by a group of foreign correspondents. It seeks to maintain an international association of journalists working in the United States and abroad; to encourage the highest standards of professional integrity and skill in the reporting of news; to help educate a new generation of journalists; to contribute to the freedom and independence of journalists and the press throughout the world; and to work toward better communication and understanding among people. The club’s awards program is now in its 83rd year. The Atavist was previously honored with a 2017 citation for best digital reporting on international affairs, for “The Mastermind” by Evan Ratliff.

This year’s awards will be presented at a ceremony in New York on April 21. A full list of the winners is available here. Thanks to the judges for this honor, and congratulations to all the recipients.
